about

“Limerence” is German/Canadian saxophonist Jonathan Lindhorst's debut album as a bandleader and composer. The term Limerence refers to an almost obsessive form of attachment or love, often bordering on obsession, and is a fitting description for his relationship to music.

On the album, Lindhorst takes his music beyond the world of jazz, drawing also from rock, folk, pop, free improvisation, as well as inspiration from comics and anachronistic words. To highlight the personal nature of this record, he begins with an introduction from the 11 year old version of himself, taken from a mixed tape he made for his parents after playing for only a few short months. These excerpts pepper the album, and pay homage to the inner child that just loves playing the saxophone. It quickly fades into “The Tryomancer's Apprentice”, a moody blues in 9 set to an energetic drum and bass groove expertly laid down by bassist Dan Fortin and drummer Nico Dann. “Unironic Moustache”, a tribute to his Turkish neighbours in the Wedding district of Berlin, is a rocked out anthem that allows guitarist Ryan Butler and Lindhorst to play off each other in a ferocious collective improv.

The album also features a lot of intimate and quiet moments, especially in a series of duo interludes with trumpeter and shakuhachi flautest Aaron Shragge. These brief improvised moments reflect a musical connection that comes from nearly 15 years of playing with each other.

At times, Lindhorst's music has a healthy dose of absurdist humour, as shown in his piece “Anatadaephobia”, a word taken from Gary Larson's The Far Side comic referring to the fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is always watching you, featuring a duck attack solo by Shragge and Lindhorst.

“Limerence” is an eclectic personal journey, filled with humor, intimacy, and energy.
